In August 1916, Bear Harding strides into Eden Methodist Church on the day of Old Pastor Donahue’s funeral. Bear is the new preacher in town, and his arrival has captured the attention of Carolina Sutton, her brother Alvin, and everyone else in Loweville, Alabama. To her surprise, Carolina is able to win the attention of the most coveted bachelor in the Tennessee Valley, but her dreams of a picture-perfect life as a pastor’s wife are soon disastrously ruined. The Great War rages, months pass, and upon the dawn of supposed peace, Carolina hardly recognizes her family. The Harding’s marriage foundation is shaken when Carolina learns a devastating truth about Bear and Alvin. Because of their choices, the family must leave Carolina’s beloved hometown to seek sanctuary elsewhere. Carolina’s steady convictions and Bear’s intoxicating extremes are pitted against one another while Alvin grieves between them. Will they be able to save their family before their choices doom them all?
